image Akumal is Mayan for "Place of The Turtle"
Akumal is a small beach-front tourist resort community 100 km (62 miles) south of CancĂșn, between the towns of Playa del Carmen and Tulum in the state of Quintana Roo, Mexico. The town was officially founded in 1958 as a community for scuba divers by Pablo Bush Romero--a Mexican businessman, diver, writer, historian, and archaeologist.

The fine white sandy beaches at Akumal Bay and Half Moon Bay are ideal for swimming and offer world-class reefs for snorkeling and diving. Endangered Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) and Green sea turtles (Chelonia Mydas) can often be seen in the waters off Akumal during the nesting season (May thru October) laying eggs on the beaches at night or swimming in the main bay during the day. Hatching season runs from June to November.

Until 1925, Akumal was part of a expansive coconut plantation. It was discovered by an expedition sponsored by the New York Times, and in 1958, a newly formed dive club which is now called C.E.D.A.M., brought Akumal to the attention of world class divers. Soon, the island's reputation grew and more and more visitors came by boat from Cozumel to visit. In the early 1960's, a road was finally built and since then the island has grown to become a tourist attraction. Despite its popularity, the island remains peaceful and unpolluted.
